| Biography: | Elijah Ward Ward was born in Sing Sing (now Ossining), N.Y., on September 16, 1816. He pursued classical studies, engaged in commercial pursuits in New York City and at the same time attended the law department of New York University. He was admitted to the bar in 1843 and commenced practice in New York City, judge advocate general of the State 1853-1855, delegate to the Democratic National Convention in 1856; elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1857-March 3, 1859); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1858 to the Thirty-sixth Congress; elected to the Thirty-seventh and Thirty-eighth Congresses (March 4, 1861-March 3, 1865); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1864 to the Thirty-ninth Congress; resumed the practice of law in New York City; elected to the Forty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1875-March 3, 1877); chairman, Committee on Commerce (Forty-fourth Congress); unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1876 to the Forty-fifth Congress; died in Roslyn, Nassau County, N.Y., February 7, 1882; interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, New York City. |
