PELE The Polynesian fire goddess, renowned for her beauty, Pele wandered the world for a long time before finally settling on Hawaii. Having assumed the form of abeautiful maiden, Pele won the heart of a young chief called Lohiau. She left him on thethird night of their marriage and told him to await her messenger to bring him to herhouse. But because of the time she was away, the young chief died ofgrief.Undaunted, Pele and her sisters recalled the chief's spirit and restored it to hisbody. Then they started on the long journey back to Pele's residence. But the goddessbecame enraged at her sisters' open admiration for Lohiau, and she overwhelmed themall with fire, leaving the young chief's soul to wander a second time.
