SPHINX A terrible beast that held the city of Thebes in thrall, during the time before Oedipus arrived. The Sphinx would ask a riddle of any travellers, and if they could not answer it, thrown them from the cliffs. Oedipus, however, solved its riddle, and the Sphinx threwitself into the sea.
