| Biography: | Hiram Rhodes Revels (September 27, 1827 - January 16, 1901) was a veteran of the American Civil War and the first African American to serve in the U.S. Senate. He represented Mississippi in 1870 and 1871. As of 2006, Revels was one of only five African Americans to have served in the United States Senate. |
