John Carpenter (born January 16, 1948 in Carthage, New York) is an American film director, screenwriter, producer, actor, and film music composer. He is considered by many to be the greatest director of modern horror, although he has in fact made films in a number of other genres.
His films are characterized by minimalist lighting and photography, static cameras, and distinctive synthesized scores (usually self-composed). He describes himself as having been influenced by Howard Hawks, Alfred Hitchcock, and The Twilight Zone.
